RESPONSE TO QUESTION ON READING AND WRITING.
How will your department members have students read, write and discuss a topic or activity related to a lesson each day?
As a department, we will incorporate reading, writing and discussion of topics through our sponge activities, guided practice, and review of homework.
Evidence of Completion: Sponge and review of homework incorporates daily problem solving activities which students must read, determine the process, solve, and provide a written explanation of their thinking. We also use writing logs to explain mathematical processes.

Identify one of the four guiding principles that your department will focus on for the next school year?
For the next school year, we will focus on providing instruction embedded in authentic experiences such as relating math to real life situations or experiences.
Evidence of Completion:
We have assigned mini projects involving such real life activities as price comparison, scale drawing, math in art.
How will your department members demonstrate a literacy rich classroom (Refer to the checklist in your packet).
We will provide students with a literacy rich math classroom by:
- displaying vocabulary for each chapter

We have used word walls for each unit.
What three RWAC strategies will your department use on a consistent basis to ensure reading comprehension skills are being taught?

We use the following devices: FOIL for order of operations, PEMDAS for order of operations, and King Hector Drinks Dark Chocolate Milk for metric conversions.

Students need to answer questions on the day’s lesson to demonstrate understanding.
Doing this should incorporate written responses that can incorporate blogs, ning or wikis.
How will you check for writing quality (e.g., spelling, punctuation, and agreement of subject and verb, control of verb tenses)? Proofreading, editing, and revision should be expected.
As a department, we will accept the responsibility for proofreading, editing, and revising our students’ work by reinforcing the step up to writing format.
Evidence of Completion:
We edit student responses to explanations of their thinking when problem solving, through their writing logs and the written parts of their projects.
